Best of the Best, Again! National Barbecue Pros and Savannah Foodies Choose Wiley’s Championship BBQ

SAVANNAH, Georgia (September 9, 2010) – “It’s unanimous,” says Wiley McCrary. At least it feels that way as Wiley’s Championship BBQ in Savannah rides a phenomenal “best of” crest in 2010.

Wiley and Janet McCrary’s little barbecue joint on Whitemarsh Island is named Best of the Best Barbecue Restaurants in America (2010), and top barbecue favorite among readers of Savannah Magazine (2010 “Best Savannah BBQ”) and Connect Savannah’s Best of Savannah poll.

“Just imagine our surprise when the publisher of Barbecue News, Kell Phelps, walked into Wiley’s. He wanted to personally deliver the publication’s 2010 Best of the Best Barbecue Restaurant certificate,” the disbelieving Wiley adds. “Mr. Phelps drove in from Douglas, Georgia, and walked in our door beaming ear to ear.”

“IT’S THE REAL DEAL”

When asking Wiley about making the elite list of “Best of the Best Barbecue Restaurants in America“, his answer is a humble one. “It’s the real deal when you’re honored by your peers,” Wiley adds. “I feel blessed.”

That’s a meaningful phrase. “It’s the real deal!” was publisher Kell Phelps summation after tasting Wiley’s Championship BBQ for the first time.

HONORED AND HUMBLED

Wiley is humbled to be on the same list with legendary restaurants. “Janet and I look at each other and wonder. Wiley’s Championship BBQ has not even been open two years!” Wiley and Janet know other national owners personally. In tone of awe Wiley names more restaurants on the “Best of the Best” list — Blue Smoke Barbecue and Righteous Urban BBQ in New York, 17th Street Grill in Illinois, Checkered Pig in Virginia, and Big Bob Gibson in Alabama.

Of the local “best of” designations, Janet adds, “We did not ask our customers to vote for Wiley’s Championship BBQ, so we are doubly happy about these honors,” says Janet McCrary. “We prefer to have the true testament of how much our Savannah neighbors love Wiley’s Championship BBQ.”

DESTINATION: WILEY’S CHAMPIONSHIP BBQ, SAVANNAH, GA

Barbecue aficionados are seeking out Wiley’s. “Barbecue if popular year around, so that’s not the news. However, the distance that barbecue fans will drive is the surprise,” says marketing executive Sandy Traub. To taste Wiley’s Championship BBQ, vacationing barbecue foodies are driving in from beachfront stays in Jekyll Island, GA and Hilton Head, SC. Admirers arrive saying, “I drove from [far away] just for your barbecue!”.

Savannah tourists say, “I saw you on TripAdvisor.” Among Savannah restaurants, Wiley’s Championship BBQ and Mrs. Wilkes Diner toggle the #1 and #2 ratings.
